Shareware and freeware come to control

An increasing number of industrial control and data acquisition packages are becoming available through ShareWare
(where you pay for it if you like it) and FreeWare (which is free). By going to http://www.shareware.com
or http://www.freeware.com, you can find packages with instructions on how to download them directly.
We did a quick search on PLC, HMI, and data acquisition topics, and found about a dozen packages in each category,
some much more "industrial" than others.
According to Doug Brock, sales and marketing manager at WebDock, Lebanon, N.J., many of the packages available
are Linux based. "There is an ongoing project to develop sophisticated software control systems for automation
based on Linux that will be free, called PuffinPLC," says Brock.
Windows-based industrial software is harder to find than Linux, but some packages are available.
WebDock recently released its DataPort PC software package as a freeware product.
The software collects data from Allen-Bradley PLC and SLC controllers.
